Earth Currents

Encaustic Mixed Media, 3 feet × 4 feet × 4 inches deep

Earth Currents flows with the subtle energies of the natural world. Branches reach outward, textures ripple, and layers of wax echo the rhythms of land and life. The piece invites reflection on movement, cycles, and the quiet forces shaping everything around us.

This work is a tactile exploration of texture, form, and what I think of as tectonic energy, the quiet, underlying tensions found in nature. The circular shape evokes unity and wholeness, while the bold horizontal band cutting across the piece introduces a sense of disruption, a reminder that even in harmony, movement and change are constant.

Earthy tones of beige, brown, and soft rust ground the work, echoing landscapes and the geological layers of the natural world. The rugged, textured surface interacts with light and shadow, giving the piece a sculptural energy that invites close inspection.

Extending branches reach outward, suggesting growth, movement, and the natural flow of life beyond defined boundaries. The interplay between grounded forms and these organic extensions evokes cycles of transformation, emergence, and the quiet power of nature.

At its heart, Earth Currents is also a meditation on our relationship with the earth. Mother Earth gives so much, food, shelter, and beauty, yet she asks nothing in return. The piece reflects the truth that we need the earth to thrive, but the earth does not need us. It is a quiet call to care, to tread more lightly, and to honor the enduring generosity of the natural world.

Earth Currents is both tactile and contemplative, a space where the viewer can engage with the rhythm of forms, the resonance of materials, and the enduring, transformative energy of the earth.
