“Ancient Scroll” is a 14×14″ encaustic mix media 3D artwork inspired by traditional birch bark scrolls, historically essential carriers of Indigenous knowledge and culture. These scrolls were inscribed with symbols and stories that conveyed spiritual teachings, genealogies, and ceremonial practices.

I have inscribed the Cree words “I love you” both within the scroll and on the painting itself. This powerful statement defies the historical suppression of Indigenous languages and serves as a tribute to my ancestors. It also acts as a reminder for future generations of the enduring presence and resilience of my culture.

This mixed-media piece blends natural fibers with encaustic medium to honor these sacred artifacts. Featuring layered textures and earthy hues, it captures the essence of birch bark while bridging industrial and natural elements. The artwork invites viewers to engage with the richness of Indigenous traditions and the enduring quality of cultural heritage.
