Encaustic Mixed Media
4 ft high x 4 ft wide x 6 inches deep
“Chrysalides” is a powerful exploration of the organic and transformative forces that shape both personal and collective journeys. Part of my ongoing series of pod-shaped works, this piece reflects my Cree Métis heritage, blending form, material, and ancestral connection. The pods symbolize life’s cyclical nature—holding potential, protection, and transformation. They speak to the quiet unfolding of identity, a process mirroring my personal journey of rediscovery, growth, and reconnection to my roots.
Each piece is created using encaustic, fiber, and mixed media, chosen for their capacity to layer, conceal, and reveal. Encaustic wax serves as a translucent skin, exposing and obscuring the depths beneath. The fibers, deeply connected to Indigenous practices, evoke ancestral knowledge, while the mixed media allows me to weave narrative elements into the forms. The resulting textures and shapes speak to the organic processes of birth, growth, and the natural cycles that resonate with Indigenous traditions. The pods serve as metaphors for life’s ongoing renewal—much like seeds that are planted, every thought, word, and action holds the potential for growth and transformation.
In two of the pods, I’ve embedded the words “I love you,” a reminder of the enduring power of love. This piece blends traditional Indigenous storytelling with contemporary art, inviting viewers to reflect on their connections to the land, their ancestors, and the legacy they wish to leave behind. What words, what kindness, will we offer the world? It’s an invitation to consider the impact we have and the stories we create for future generations as we move through healing, resilience, and transformation.
Through these works, I invite viewers to explore the layers beneath the surface—unveiling the beauty that comes with patience, connection, and understanding. Ultimately, all things return to us, woven into the fabric of our existence. These pods hold stories both personal and universal, speaking to our shared human journey of discovery, belonging, and the eternal cycles of life.
